Synopsis: Former pool player "Fast" Eddie Felson, now a successful liquor dealer, is drawn to the game again when he meets Vincent, a young nonprofessional with a natural talent for the game. Eddie convinces Vincent's girlfriend Carmen that he can mold the youth into a top-rank player. He takes the couple on the road to show them the fine points of the game. Vincent enjoys life in the pool halls, but he's very resistant to taking the older man's advice about playing, specifically when to win and when it's smarter to lose. Frustrated with Vincent's attitude, Eddie resumes playing himself. When he's beaten by Amos, a skillful con artist half his age, Eddie tells Vincent that he has nothing further to teach him, and that he should go out on his own. After going their separate ways, Eddie, Vincent, and Carmen meet again at a major pool tournament in Atlantic City, where the two men resume their friendship.
