Synopsis: Alice Hyatt, who dreamed of becoming a singer as a child, decides to pursue this career when her husband is suddenly killed. Going on the road from New Mexico to Arizona with her impish eleven-year-old son, Tom, she has a tough time singing in bars, has to escape a violent lover, and ends up as a waitress in a cafe. There Alice meets divorced farmer David Barrie, and begins an uneasy romance that leads to her agreeing to try domesticity once again.
